If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular scheduled time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time. Swallow PROTONIX Delayed-Release Tablets whole, with or without food in the stomach. For patients unable to swallow a 40 mg tablet, two 20 mg tablets may be taken.

It is a prescription drug which is available as the brand-name drug Protonix. This drug is a proton pump inhibitor which inhibits gastric acid secretion. By reducing the production of acid, it allows the esophagus and stomach to heal.

If you use this medicine, a usual course of treatment for H. pylori bacteria eradication lasts for up to 14 days. Protonix is also used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a serious condition where the stomach produces too much acid.

Usually, only up to 8 weeks of treatment is required; although it may be used for up to 12 months to maintain healing of erosive esophagitis. No dosage adjustment is needed in people with kidney or liver disease or in the elderly. Protonix is available as a generic under the name pantoprazole.
