What is a spitz nevus?
Spitz nevus (Epithelioid and Spindle-Cell Nevus) is an uncommon, benign, melanocytic nevus that is usually acquired and has histologic features that overlap with those of melanoma. Spitz nevi were previously diagnosed as melanomas due to their similar appearance under a microscope, until it was found that they did not show malignant behavior.
What happens if Spitz nevi is not completely excised?
What happens if Spitz nevi is not completely excised?
In addition, incompletely excised Spitz nevi, such as can be seen when the lesion is initially biopsied via a shave procedure, can recur and create diagnostic confusion with an evolving melanoma. Atypical Spitz tumors should be completely excised with clear margins.
What is Spitz naevus and how dangerous is it?
It can make things bigger (magnify) by up to 10 times. Looking at a mole with a dermatoscope can help doctors decide if a mole needs to be removed. Spitz naevus occurs mainly in children and young adults. It is a rare type of mole that might look worrying, but is benign (non cancerous).
Can dermoscopy reliably differentiate between benign and atypical Spitz nevus?
Can dermoscopy reliably differentiate between benign and atypical Spitz nevus?
However, dermoscopy cannot reliably differentiate a benign Spitz nevus from an atypical Spitz nevus as there is significant overlap in the frequency of additional dermatoscopic features such as linear and polymorphous vessels and blue-white veil. Figure 3. Typical histology of a Spitz nevus (H&E).
